MANILA, Philippines – Former University of Santo Tomas center Karim Abdul is going to pursue his football dream in Europe.

Abdul, who wrapped up his playing stint in the UAAP in Season 78 by leading the Growling Tigers to three finals appearances (where they came away a first runner-up each time), has always loved the game of football. During the offseason, the Cameroonian center would oft be found playing goalkeeper for Dolphins in the United Football League.

“Back in Cameroon, I played striker and midfielder,” shared Abdul. “Here in the Philippines, to minimize the risk of injury because of the basketball season, I played goalkeeper. At least I only had to use my hands.”

At 6’7”, Abdul had good size to tend to the nets but he also had to dive for the ball. A fact that did not amuse his former coach Pido Jarencio who once said that Abdul knew there were consequences should he get injured.

“By the grace of God, I never suffered an injury,” he said.

Now the Real Madrid supporter is training to get ready for a chance to play in Europe. It was a fit and lean-looking Abdul who showed up to support UST during their losing effort, 99-56, to La Salle last Sunday (October 23).

“Young team,” noted Abdul who played alongside some of the team’s veterans such as Jon Sheriff, Louie Vigil, Jeepy Faundo and Renzo Subido.

According to Abdul, his fitness program is preparing him for the rigors of European football play. “I am not sure where I will be going but my agent is looking at opportunities.”

“I think after playing in the UAAP and the UFL and helping UST win a national championship, a chance to play professional football in Europe in any level will make it a dream career for me,” he added.
