It happened over the weekend when the Indonesian first couple landed in the Philippines and was greeted by children who gave honored them with a lei for President Joko Widodo and a bouquet for his wife, Iriana.

The couple, at first holding hands while alighting from the jet, then gave away gifts in exchange for the flowers.

Among the visiting leaders over the weekend, only Widodo and his wife made the gesture upon arrival.

Indonesians have a version of the Filipino "pasalubong" tradition, which they call "oleh-oleh."

"It is usually as a term for representing giving some gifts to your friend or neighborhood after you are done traveling," an Indonesian explained on Quora.
