Rio on high alert after another suspected terrorist arrest
The Brazilian federal and state authorities announced the arrest of a man on suspected ties to terrorism on Friday, a week before the 2016 Olympic Games.
Federal police said they arrested Chaer Kalaun, a 28-year-old Brazilian-Lebanese man, on grounds of possible ties to terrorism.
The arrest came a week after cops rounded up 12 individuals who allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
“The federal police is doing its work,” Jose Mariano Beltrame, Rio's state secretary of security said in the press conference.
Kalaun’s lawyer had told journalists at the police headquarters that his client only posted messages on social media and never intended to attack the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games that kick off on August. 5
