Video of the Day: Mother with Alzheimer's remembers her daughter

Alixandra Caole Vila - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Kelly Gunderson of Georgia uploaded a heartwarming video of her and her mother with Alzheimer’s disease as they lay in bed together. The video was titled “God’s Gift,” – the kind of gift that can never be measured and can never be tagged with a price.

Alzheimer's is a common type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others. It is the sixth leading cause of death in United States.

In the video, Kelly and her 87-year-old mother talk while Kelly’s mom appears to be confused.

Kelly captured the rare moment when her mother suddenly remembers who she is:

“Kelly,” her mother says
“Yes, Mama!” Gunderson says. “Yes, I am Kelly.”
“Well, I love Kelly,” he mother says. “And didn’t I name you Kelly?”
“Yes, you did!” replies Gunderson, leading to a shared laugh.
“Well, I love you, Kelly,” her mother says.
“I love you, Mama,” Gunderson adds.

And those were the sweetest words she had ever heard.

The video was uploaded last Aug. 29, 2014 and has reached more than 6 million views on YouTube as of today.

May this video pull a string in everyone’s heart by reminding us to be grateful for a mother’s love and making us appreciate even the shortest memory shared with our families.
