Comelec precinct website overwhelmed by hits

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) website’s precinct finder bogged down yesterday morning due to the big number of hits or visitors.

Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal, chairman of the poll automation steering committee, said their website could not be accessed as of yesterday morning so they put up hotlines to help voters find their respective polling precincts.

“Traffic to visit the Comelec website was more than what we had anticipated,” Larrazabal said in an interview.

Larrazabal said the bandwidth of the poll body’s website was increased from five to 10 megabits per second (Mbps).

Larrazabal also announced that the commission decided to delay the release of the uniform resource locator (URL) of the website where the election results will be posted.

“We don’t want the URL to be hacked so we will release the URL a little bit late. If we give it now, we are sure that people will try to attack it,” Larrazabal added.

Smartmatic-Total Information Management Corp. (TIM) had estimated that the poll results would be out in 48 hours and this will be posted by the Comelec on its website.

Smartmatic-TIM said almost all of the compact flash cards have been delivered to polling precincts yesterday.

“The report that we got from the Comelec is that all the cards are already there. The report that we had was that 99.9 percent of the precincts were already voting (on time),” said Smartmatic president for Asia Pacific Cesar Flores.

The delivery of the flash cards was earlier feared to be late in five percent of the country’s polling precincts, resulting in the delayed counting of ballots in these areas. – With Sheila Crisostomo
