Mixed reactions on Leni's VP bid trend on social media

MANILA, Philippines — Netizens expressed support and disappointment following Liberal Party’s announcement of Camarines Rep. Leni Robredo is its vice-presidential candidate and running mate of standard-bearer, Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

Some netizens approved of Robredo’s decision to pursue the vice presidency, citing her integrity and reputation as a lawyer and leader in Camarines Sur.

Supporters noted how Robredo broke the political dynasty in Camarines Sur.

Other netizens said Robredo’s announcement made the selection of vice presidential candidates easier.

While some netizens are rejoicing over Robredo’s move, others were disappointed finding her declaration too early as she has only rendered three years as Camarines Sur's congresswoman.

Some netizens said that although they like Robredo as an individual, they will still not choose her as a vice president.

Some netizens lamented how Robredo was initially reluctant to run for a higher post and considered her decision as “having no choice.”

Robredo admitted in her acceptance speech that she was ridiculed as "pabebe" due to her resistance.

"Sa tagal nga po ng prosesong pinagdaanan upang makapagdesisyon, ang kantiyaw na po sa akin ng iba sa inyo, nagpa-pabebe na lang daw po ako," Robredo said in her speech.

Robredo, widow of late Liberal Party member and Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, was also compared to former President Corazon Aquino who was also a widow who eventually decided to run for a higher position.

Some netizens who support Robredo also made their own tandems apart from what they called “Ro-Ro” or Roxas-Robredo tandem.

Others also suggested Sen. Grace Poe to can partner with Robredo to possibly make history as the first time women are occupying the two top government posts.

“Leni Robredo” is the second trending topic on Twitter in the Philippines after she declared her vice-presidential bid at the historic Club Filipino in San Juan on Monday morning. However, some remained clueless on her identity.
