LISTEN: The presidency is for men, 1986 ad claims

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines —  The administration of President Ferdinand Marcos released a broadcast advertisement in 1986 to warn the public not to vote for a woman in the 1986 snap elections.

The audio clip voiced by a woman claims that she has handled mere domestic chores and cannot face to the challenge of the presidency.

"Na kung iisipin ko na nasa kamay ng isang babaeng tulad ko iaasa ang buhay ng milyong-milyong Pilipino, tatapatin ko po kayo, hindi ko ito magagampanan," the voice talent says.

The 1986 presidential polls were marred by electoral fraud and violence instigated by the Marcos administration.

Marcos' iron rule was brought down by the People Power Revolution that installed Corazon Aquino, widow of the martyred Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., to the presidency.

The audio clip was released by the Malacañang's Official Gazette for the revolution's 29th anniversary on Wednesday.
