LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — A series of volcanic tremors or earthquake swarm was monitored around Mayon Volcano yesterday, indicating that recharging of magma in its chamber is taking place again, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported yesterday.

At least 143 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours.

Phivolcs resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said they would conduct an aerial survey to recompute the volume of volcanic materials extruded by the volcano.

Laguerta said Mayon had spewed around 60 million cubic meters of volcanic materials, which is 20 million cubic meters lower than their initial estimate.

“This means that more volcanic materials could still be spewed by Mayon,” he said.

Mariton Bornas, Phivolcs volcano monitoring division chief, said the volcanic tremors are stronger.

“With these magma recharging-triggered volcanic earthquakes…it is still remote to scale down the alert status of Mayon,” she said.

Mayon’s recent activity was characterized by sporadic and weak lava fountaining, lava flow and sulphur dioxide emissions, which are still above the normal thresholds.

At least 17,329 families or 66,009 persons remained in 61 evacuation centers yesterday.
