ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A suspected Abu Sayyaf sniper surrendered to the military in Basilan on Saturday.

Ligoda Tanjal, an alleged follower of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Nurhassan Jamiri alias, told authorities that he was worried that the ongoing military operation would catch and neutralize him in the coming days.

Tanjal surrendered to the members of the Army’s 74th Infantry Battalion (IB), according Joint Task Force Basilan chief Brig. Gen. Juvymax Uy.

Tanjal also yielded a rifle and ammunition to the Army in Barangay Banah, Tipo-Tipo town at around 3 p.m.

Tanjal was the tenth Abu Sayyaf bandit to surrender in Basilan this year.

The military has yet to determine how effective Tanjal as a sniper and how many troopers he had killed.

The suspect was placed under the military custody and has to undergo debriefing process.

“He said he surrendered because he wanted to have a new life, away from banditry and danger. He also said that he was encouraged to lay down arms after learning that his former companions are already undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration program,” Uy said.
