ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The government here formally turned over Friday a four-storey building with 20 classrooms to address the rapid growth of student population in a public secondary school.

Rep. Celso Lobregat of Zamboanga City's first congressional district said the school building project worth P32 million is given to Zamboanga National High School West (ZNHSW) to help students in the countryside.

Lobregat, chairman of the House Committee on public works, said they will build another school building with 24 classrooms for ZNHSW.

Currently, the school has student population of 7,273 with 255 teachers. To accommodate all of the students, teachers would systematically schedule classes.

The school principal Dr. Ma. Pilar Gregorio, schools division Superintendent Romy Triambulo and village officials lauded the efforts of Lobregat in addressing the lack of classrooms.

Lobregat said education is needed to to fight poverty.

He also said that he is following the footsteps of his late mother, Ma. Clara Lobregat and grandfather, Don Pablo Lorenzo. Lobregat's grandfather became the Education secretary during presidency of Elpidio Quirino.

“My responsibility is to create an environment, to make it easier for the teacher to teach and for students to learn,” Lobregat said.
