COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Officials hired on Monday 75 more public teachers to propagate a “culture of peace” in conflict-affected areas of Maguindanao.

Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and regional Education Secretary Rasol Mitmug, Jr. facilitated the placement of the teachers in permanent teaching posts during a symbolic gathering at the ARMM compound on Monday morning.

"All of them are licensed teachers and they all passed the examinations needed to test their capability to handle classes in barrio schools," Hataman said.

Hataman said the Department of Education-ARMM will hire more licensed teachers this year to boost literacy in the region.

The autonomous region covers Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, which are both in mainland Mindanao, and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

Hataman said the 75 teachers will be involved in activities meant to foster religious and cultural solidarity among ARMM's Muslim, Christian and Lumad communities.

The regional governor appointed early this month more than 200 teachers for different towns in Sulu.

The newly-hired teachers for remote schools in Sulu have also been tasked with focusing on peace education subjects in support of the national government’s effort of restoring normalcy in the troubled province.
