192 new teachers hired for Sulu schools

John Unson - The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — At least 190 additional public school teachers will be assigned to different schools in Sulu, officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) said over the weekend.

ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman signed the appointments of the new teachers in Jolo on Thursday.

The hiring of 192 new teachers will beef up government efforts meant to address illiteracy in the island province, according to Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command.

“It’s a major concern for us. Militant groups are taking advantage of the illiteracy in local communities and duping people into supporting their  cause,” Galvez said.

The Department of Education-ARMM hired more than 500 teachers for remote areas in Sulu from 2013 to 2017 after cleansing the roster of teaching personnel of ghost teachers.

More than 2,000 licensed teachers, who are now working in other ARMM provinces, were hired by the regional government during the period.

ARMM police director Chief Superintendent Graciano Mijares ordered the Sulu provincial police to help secure the new teachers who would be assigned in remote villages.
