Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, chairman of the committee on housing and urban development of the House of Representatives, conducted an ocular inspection of an 11-hectare housing project in Barangay Sagonsongan in this city yesterday.

An initial 1,173 temporary shelters are being built, of which 500 units are expected to be ready for occupancy by Dec. 20.

“Many of those who suffered from Yolanda’s wrath were victimized twice...as they were forced to accept substandard houses. Marawi has to be insulated from such despicable acts of corruption and abuse,” he said.

Each single-detached housing unit, which has a floor area of 24 square meters, costs P160,000.

The NHA said a park, playground, basketball court, mosque, health center, market, day care center, multi-purpose hall and tricycle terminal would also be built near the housing units.
