Red tide alert up in 5 provinces

MANILA, Philippines — The coastal waters in five provinces in Luzon and the Visayas remain positive for red tide toxin, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

In its latest bulletin, the BFAR said shellfish gathered from Irong-Irong, Maqueda, Villareal and Cambatutay bays in Western Samar; Matarinao in Eastern Samar; Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal in Bataan; Inner Malampaya Sound in Taytay, Palawan; Carigara in Leyte, and Mandaon in Masbate are not safe for human consumption.

Water samples from Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan were also found positive for red tide toxin. 

The BFAR said fish, squid, shrimps and crabs are safe to eat provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
