Magnitude 4.9 quake shakes Eastern Samar

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted Eastern Samar on Wednesday.

In its latest earthquake bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the tremor occurred at 10:48 a.m. Its epicenter was located two kilometers north-west of Salcedo, Eastern Samar and had a depth of focus of 17 kilometers.

The quake was felt at Intensity V in Salcedo and Mercedes, Eastern Samar while Lawaan, Eastern Samar experienced it at Intensity IV. Phivolcs categorizes Intensity V as "strong" and described it as "generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors."

On the other hand, several other towns felt the quake at Intensity III. These include Borongan City, Guian, and San Julian, Eastern Samar; Tacloban City; Palo, Leyte; and Catbalogan City, Samar.

Phivolcs said there was no damage nor expected aftershock from the earthquake.

Two other tremors occurred on Eastern Samar Wednesday.
