LGUs retract class suspensions; Albay classes still canceled
MANILA, Philippines — A number of local government units on Sunday took back the declaration of class suspensions set on December 4, Monday, after a transport group canceled its planned two-day strike.
The mayors of Guagua, Pampanga and Camarines Sur said there would no longer be class suspensions in their area on Monday after the announcement made by Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide.
While the two LGUs repealed their scheduled class suspensions, Albay, Bicol Gov. Al Francis Bichara retained his earlier announcement.
According to Bichara, the postponed transport strike is only applicable to Metro Manila as Piston-Bicol Deputy Secretary-General Ramon Rescovilla said their protest in Bicol would still push through.
“Please be advised that classes in all levels, both private and public, are still suspended as per official advisory issued by PDRRMC Albay, dated 1st of December 2017,” Bichara said.
Major transport groups Piston and No to Jeepney Phaseout Coalition were supposed to stage a two-day nationwide strike to protest the government’s plan to phaseout jeepneys aged 15 years and older. The groups canceled the strike to heed the call of Sen. Grace Poe who asked them to reconsider their plan.
The groups are scheduled to air their concern regarding the jeepney modernization program of the government at a hearing by the Senate public services committee on Thursday.
