MANILA, Philippines — Close to a million aspiring voters nationwide were able to file their application forms by the end of the registration period yesterday.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is confident it can meet its target of about a million additional voters for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls next year.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the poll body received a total of 496,816 applications for registration from Nov. 6 to 25. It previously targeted 500,000 new regular voters and 350,000 new youth voters.

The receipt of the voter applications by the Comelec does not guarantee automatic approval, as the election registration boards (ERB) will still have to go through them.

“It will take approximately two weeks for the ERBs to process the applications. Notifications of disapprovals will be sent out to applicants. Approved applications will be posted at the offices of the election officers (OEOs),” Jimenez said.

After the posting of approved applications, the Comelec will accept petitions for inclusion in the voters‘ list from those who think their applications were erroneously disapproved.

The Comelec said it has no plan to extend the registration period.
