Cardona under state of calamity due to water lilies

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A state of calamity has been declared in Cardona town in Rizal after water lilies clogging a portion of Laguna de Bay affected the livelihood of its residents.

The calamity was declared on Nov. 6, Erwin Dionisio, municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer, said yesterday.

Dionisio said water lilies washed away from parts of the lake in other towns in Rizal have clogged about two kilometers of the lake within their area.

He said at least 8,600 fishermen in Barangays Calahan, Dalig, Looc, Nagsulo, Sampad, Ticulio, Balibago, Boor, Lambac, Malanggam-Calubacan, Navotas, Subay, Patunhay and Tuna were affected.

“They cannot use their motorboats because the waterways are blocked,” Dionisio said.

Residents are helping the local government remove the water lilies from the lake.
