MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Soldiers found 30 assorted firearms in a shallow part of Lake Lanao near a village in Marawi City on Sunday.
Maj. Gen. Carlito Galvez, Jr. of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Mindanao Command told The STAR on Monday that the discarded guns were discovered by Army personnel who had been tipped off by residents.
The junked weapons include:
- A crew-served .50 caliber machinegun
- Three M60 machineguns
- A dozen M14 rifles
- Four .50-cal sniper rifles
- Two AK-47 rifles
- Two .30-cal carbines
- An M79 single-shot grenade launcher
- Two M16 rifles
Galvez said informants have confirmed that the firearms belong to the Maute terror group.
"It seems the terrorists dropped the firearms into the lake to hasten their escape," Galvez said.
Marawi City, which was attacked by Islamic State-affiliated Maute terror group in May, was declared liberated on October 23 but clearing operations against stragglers and booby traps are ongoing.
Security forces have found 30 guns in these operations in the past three weeks.
Galvez said residents are actively helping the police and the Westmincom look for guns that the Maute have hidden away.
