Cagayan rains death toll rises to 7

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines  —  The death toll from heavy rains spawned by the northeast monsoon in Cagayan has risen to seven.

Gerard Sabban, 9, and Mark Ronald Maggay, 10, drowned while playing in a flooded rice field in Barangay Cordova, Amulung town on Wednesday. Rescuers said the rice field was submerged in floodwaters six feet deep.

The decomposing body of Richard Perez, 23, was found in a creek near his hut in Sitio Catiuyan, Barangay Rapuli, Sta. Ana. He was buried alive in a landslide on Tuesday.

Three persons were swept away by rushing water in Barangay Centro East, Ballesteros and Barangay Ipil, Gonzaga on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the body of a landslide victim was recovered in Barangay San Vicente, Sta. Ana.

A state of calamity was declared in Sta. Ana, which was hardest hit by the flooding.

Classes were suspended in the province in the past three days as many barangays remained flooded. Several roads and bridges were also impassable.
