Additional budget for displaced Marawi workers sought
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DOLE-ARMM) has requested for additional budget to assist workers displaced by the fighting in Marawi.
“We received the request as early as last week...We are prepared to give them the assistance,” DOLE Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod said yesterday.
Maglunsod said the request has been referred to the office of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello.
“The process usually takes time. That is why the DOLE-ARMM directly forwarded the request to us,” he said, adding that the ARMM is independent from the main DOLE office.
Maglunsod gave assurance that DOLE could assist displaced workers through its emergency employment program.
Under the program, displaced workers are hired for short-term jobs.
In July, the DOLE released P30 million under its Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers for 2,900 workers displaced by the conflict in Marawi.
DOLE records showed Marawi has a working population of over 200,000. Among the sources of income are agriculture, trading and export.
