MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Wednesday expressed its condolences with the Cebu faithful following the death of Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

"President Rodrigo Duterte and Cardinal Vidal had a friendly, cordial relationship," Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

Abella noted that Vidal paid a courtesy call to Malacañang shortly after Duterte assumed office last year and "assured the Chief Executive of his fervent prayers for him and his administration."

Vidal, one of the three cardinals in the country passed away this morning at the Perpetual Succour Hospital in Cebu City.

According to a report from The Freeman, Vidal had been brought to the hospital last week for fever and difficulty in breathing.

"We are thankful for the kind bishop's pastoral role of the Catholic faithful," Abella said.

In 1981, the late Pope John Paul II appointed Vidal as Coadjutor Archbishop of Cebu before becoming the province's archbishop in less than a year. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
