Rody tackles development with Mindanao leaders
MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte has met with four sultans of Mindanao and discussed ways to promote development in the conflict-stricken south.
Duterte met Phugdalun Kiram II, Michael Ong Mastura, Omar Mangudadatu and Abdaham Idjirani at Malacañang on Thursday, Palace officials said.
The meeting focused on possible economic activities and opportunities that can be implemented in Mindanao.
Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, who was at the meeting, said Duterte and the Mindanao leaders discussed agriculture, tourism and power.
Also in the meeting were Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Mindanao Development Authority chairman Datu Abul Khayr Alonto, special envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Alamarim Tillah and Council for Philippine Affairs secretary-general Pastor Saycon.
The meeting came as government troopers launched a final strike against Maute terrorists in Marawi City.
Duterte has been pushing for the establishment of a federal government, believing the system will put an end to the decades-old conflict in Mindanao.
