MANILA, Philippines — With the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections now officially postponed, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is planning to resume voter registration next month.

“We want to give an opportunity to all qualified voters to exercise their right of suffrage,” Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said over the weekend.

The poll body stopped the voter registration on April 29 to give way to the preparations for the polls.

Last week, President Duterte signed Republic Act 10952 postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from Oct. 23 to May next year.

There are more than 56 million and 20 million registered voters for the barangay and SK elections, respectively.

Based on Comelec’s timeline, the voter registration for the May 2019 midterm polls will run until Sept. 29, 2018.

The poll body stopped all preparations for the barangay and SK polls, including the implementation of the gun ban on Oct. 4.

The Comelec also ordered its officers to preserve and maintain all documents, forms and supplies pertaining to the Oct. 31, 2016 and Oct. 23, 2017 barangay and SK elections that are in their custody.
