52 NPA rebels surrender in September

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Fifty-two New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas surrendered to the military in September, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) bared yesterday.

AFP Public Affairs Office chief Col. Edgard Arevalo attributed the surrender of the guerrillas to the intensified military operations against the rebel group. He also expects more surrenderees in the coming months.

“The surge of NPA surrenderees over the past month is a positive result of the AFP’s robust and incessant combined intelligence, combat and civil-military operations,” Arevalo  said.

“It is also a product of the active cooperation of our stakeholders, particularly of the support given by the communities and local government units within our areas of operation,” he said.

The AFP said the surrender indicated the weakening of the communist movement and its political arm, the National Democratic Front.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

“The surrenderees said they have been experiencing hardships within the organization,” Arevalo said.
