ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The military in Zamboanga Sibugay accepted the surrender of seven alleged New People's Army rebels on Wednesday, a military official said Thursday.
Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the rebels yielded two AK-47 rifles and a cal-.45 pistol when they surrendered at the headquarters of the 102nd Infantry Brigade in Ipil town.
Petinglay said the rebels surrendered due to the relentless operations and intelligence tracking by the military. Two other NPA members are expected to surrender soon, she said.
The surrenderees will undergo debriefing before being entered in the government's social reintegration program.
Earlier this week, nine supposed NPA guerrillas turned themselves in to the Army’s 33rd Infantry Battalion in Barangay Malegdeg in Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat.
Different NPA units have been clashing with security forces even before peace talks with the government broke down in July.
The Abra-based Agustin Begnalen Command of the NPA has claimed an attack on a detachment of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit in remote Bucloc town on Wednesday afternoon.
Diego Wadagan, spokesperson for the NPA command, said it was the unit's contribution to the NPA national command’s order to launch more tactical offensives against the government.
According to reports, hundreds of residents of Lobo town and Batangas City in Batangas had to leave their homes this week to avoid fighting between troops and NPA guerrillas in Mt. Banoy.
Senior Superintendent Randy Peralta, Batangas police director, said government forces reportedly overran a rebel camp on the mountain.
