At least 30 hurt as ferry hits island in Romblon

MANILA, Philippines — A passenger ship collided with an island of Romblon province a little past 5 a.m. on Tuesday, damaging the ship and leaving more than 30 people injured.
According to Romblon News Network, the M/V Maria Matilde of Montenegro Shipping Lines Inc. was headed to Romblon Port from Odiongan Port to drop off passengers from Batangas when the accident happened.
Cajidiocan town council member Marvin Ramos said a passenger reported being awakened by what he thought was a loud explosion when the ship hit land. The passenger was surprised to find that the ship had hit Tablas Island.
He also claimed to have talked to the ship's chief mate, who said the ship's GPS had failed. The chief mate was not on duty when the collision happened.
The collision damaged the ship's hull and threw passengers from their cots. Around 30 passengers suffered minor injuries and three had major injuries, Romblon News reported.
The ship reached port at 7 a.m.
