Magnitude 5.4 quake rattles Lanao del Sur
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Sunday reported that a magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Lanao del Sur.
In its bulletin, the institute said the quake’s epicenter was traced 10 kilometers northwest of Wao, Lanao del Sur. It occurred at 4:47 a.m.
The tremor categorized as very strong was felt at Intensity VI in Kailangan, Bukidnon and Intensity V in Cagayan de Oro City. Pangantucan, Kadingilan, Maramag, Damulog, Quezon, Don Carlos, Valencia City and Malaybalay City in Bukidnon felt the quake at Intensity IV.
On the other hand, areas such as Kabacan, North Cotabato; Talakag, Bukidnon; and Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental felt the quake at Intensity III.
Phivolcs said with Intensity VI, limited rockfalls might occur in hilly to mountainous areas. It added that at this intensity people might experience fear and run outdoors. Slight damage might also be incurred by well-built structures.
As of 10:39 a.m., eight aftershocks were recorded in Wao, Lanao del Sur ranging from magnitudes 4 to 4.3. The aftershocks were felt at various intensities in Cagayan de Oro City.
Phivolcs also recorded tremors in the provinces of Quezon, Bukidnon, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Agusan del Sur and Occidental Mindoro on Sunday morning. These quakes are all tectonic in origin.
