5 dead in Batangas road mishap

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna  , Philippines  —  Five passengers of a van died when their vehicle was dragged by a trailer truck in Nasugbu, Batangas on Tuesday afternoon.

The fatalities were identified as Oscar de la Cruz, the driver of the Hyundai Starex; Benjamin Jalandoni, 71; Hermelinda Corsiga, 47; Maria Angela Jalandoni, 40, and a certain Daday.

A report on gmanetwork.com said the rescue team took around 14 hours to recover the bodies of the victims.

Senior Superintendent Randy Peralta, Batangas police director, said the accident occurred along the highway in Sitio Bayabasan, Barangay Aga at around 3:36 p.m.

Peralta said the truck owned by JC Movers was on its way to Calaca town from Cavite when the driver, Gerardo Tiongson, lost control of the wheel as he was driving down the road.

Tiongson was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The truck also hit a passenger jeepney. The driver, Giovanni Bulaclac, was unharmed.
