9 NPA rebels slain in clash with soldiers

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya  , Philippines  —  Nine New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with government troops in Burgos, Caranglan, Nueva Ecija yesterday.  

Four of the fatalities were identified as a certain Gian,  Bunso, Asok and Joel Manangan, alias Razul.

A soldier was wounded in the gunfight, Col. Isagani Nato, Northern Luzon Command spokesman, said.

Nato said nine rifles and eight backpacks containing subversive documents were recovered from the rebels. 

Soldiers of the 84th Infantry Battalion were responding to the reported presence of armed men in Sitio Baras when the clash occurred.

Meanwhile, the police in Sorsogon is on full alert following recent attacks by communist insurgents.

On Monday, NPA guerrillas attacked the 3rd Maneuver Company of the 5th Regional Public Safety Battalion in Barangay San Ignatio, Gubat and burned six motorcycles. On Tuesday, rebels clashed with soldiers of the 31st Infantry Battalion in Bacon district, Sorsogon City.
