BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Baguio–Benguet Ecumenical Group, an organization of the clergy and laity is readying a formal complaint against electronic bingo games in the city.

The complaint signed by the BBEG will be handed to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) by Catholic priest Manny Flores.

The complaint will also be sent to the 14-member Baguio City council.

The group sees it as the first phase of a fight against gambling in the city, where at least five applications for e-bingo outlets have been approved.

The city council earlier passed the decision to Pagcor in the face of opposition to the move.

“I am frustrated and sad that our leaders could not make a stand,” said Flores, who said the group is preparing a signature campaign to overturn the approvals.

He said the city council chose to favor the e-bingo operators despite opposition from the public.

“Those who did not speak ... won,” he said, citing the absence of gambling advocates during public hearings.

The opposition comes amid allegations that the  two e-bingo operators — Bingo Palace Corp. and Highland Gaming Corp. —  share an office address and an officer.

In an April 18, 2017 letter request from Bingo Palace Corp., its executive vice president Alejandro Alonte and president Jimmy Ong asked for “a no-objection” resolution for the gaming firm to operate an electronic and traditional bingo outlet in Albergo Hotel along Villamor Drive, Baguio City.

A similar request of “no objection resolution” by Highland Bingo Corporation was also signed by Alonte, who was also the executive vice president for operations and marketing of that company.
