MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED 6 p.m.) — The low pressure area being monitored by the state weather bureau has developed into a tropical depression and was named "Jolina." It has entered the Philippine area of responsibility this afternoon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the center of Tropical Depression Jolina was estimated at 400 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 560 km east of Casiguran, Aurora at 3 p.m. Thursday.

"Jolina" is the second tropical cyclone to hit the country this month. 

It is packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph. It is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm or a severe tropical storm.

The state weather bureau said the tropical depression is forecast to move west northwest at 17 kph. 

"Jolina" is expected to make landfall on northern Luzon on Friday evening or Saturday early morning. It will pass through Cagayan Valley, Cordillera and Ilocos. 
 
By Saturday afternoon, the tropical depression is expected to exit the landmass by Saturday afternoon. It is forecast to exit PAR on Sunday.

PAGASA said that Signal No. 1 might possibly be raised over Quirino, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga and Northern Cagayan tonight.
 
It said the southwest monsoon or habagat will be affecting the western section of Luzon. It also warned of light to moderate and occasionally heavy rains over Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon and Visayas.
