GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines (Updated 6:59 p.m.) — Camp Crame shipped here 201 brand new assault rifles to boost the counter-terrorism campaign of the Police Regional Office-12.

Chief Superintendent Cedrick Train, PRO-12 director, showed the new Norinco 5.56-cal CQ-A5 rifles to reporters on Tuesday. The CQ-A5 is a Chinese version of the M16 rifle.

He said he is thankful to the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police for augmenting the regional office's arsenal with 200 CQs and a 7.62-caliber Type 79 sniper rifle, which is similar to the Russian Dragunov SVD.

The supply package, which arrived on Sunday, also included bullet reloading machines for the police stations in the cities of Tacurong, Koronadal and Kidapawan.

Superintendent Romeo Galgo Jr., spokesman of PRO-12, said Camp Crame also sent them 77,000 rounds of ammunition for the brand new rifles.

Galgo said the rifles will be distributed to the provincial and city police offices in Region 12.

The region also covers North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato and Sarangani provinces and General Santos City, where the headquarters of PRO-12 is located.

China, in June, donated TY-85 7.62mm sniper rifles, CS/LR4A high-precision rifles and CQ-A5 5.56 automatic rifles to the Philippines. The shipment came with 6 million rounds of ammunition, according to reports.

The military aid package will be followed by a second batch of weapons in the coming months, China Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua said then.
