Mindanao execs downplay travel warning

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines  – Local officials in Mindanao have shrugged off fresh travel warnings issued by three countries.

The Philippine Councilors League (PCL)-Mindanao asserted that it is generally peaceful in most parts of the region despite the ongoing fighting between government troops and Maute militants in Marawi.

Australia, Britain and Canada issued fresh travel warnings this week after President Duterte extended martial law in Mindanao until the end of the year. The Western governments cited rising threats of terror attacks and kidnappings by Islamist militants.

“These travel warnings are temporary...They will not be there forever. Besides, despite the travel warning their citizens are still coming,” said Oliver Owen Garcia, PCL-Mindanao vice chairman.

Garcia said the security situation in most parts of Mindanao has normalized since the President declared martial law on May 23.
