'Gorio' intensifies into tropical storm

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration on Wednesday morning said weather disturbance "Gorio" has developed into a tropical storm.

In its 11 a.m. severe weather bulletin, PAGASA said "Gorio's" eye was located at 595 kilometer East of Casiguran, Aurora as of 10 a.m. It has maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kilometer per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

The state weather bureau said that after it intensified into a tropical storm, "Gorio" slightly slowed down as it moves north northwestward. It is forecast to move north northwest at 13 kph.

"This weather system will enhance Southwest Monsoon which will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over the Western Section of Luzon and  light to moderate rains over the rest of Luzon and Visayas," PAGASA added.

"Gorio" is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain within its 400 km diameter.

Despite the expected heavy rain, PAGASA said it has not yet issued any tropical cyclone warning signal. — Rosette Adel
