Beauty contestant raped, killed

DAVAO CITY , Philippines – A former beauty pageant contestant was allegedly raped and killed by her jilted lover on Samal island on Wednesday.
The body of Kimberly Autida, 19, a candidate of the Mutya ng Samal 2016, was dumped in a carabao pond near her house in Barangay Adecor, Kaputian district at around 2:15 p.m.
Initial investigation showed the victim failed to return after her mother asked her to buy food for lunch.
Laborer Elvin Juna, 20, a neighbor of the victim, was arrested yesterday. His body bore scratch marks, which probers said was an indication that the victim tried to defend herself.
Police said Juna’s jacket was recovered near the body of the victim.
Samal Mayor David Uy said Juna is a known drug user and surrendered under Oplan Tokhang last year.
Uy said Juna had reportedly courted Autida, but she rejected him.
Senior Superintendent Marcial Magistrado, Davao del Norte police chief, said the victim had no visible wounds, but there was an indication that her attacker punched her in the stomach, which could have damaged her internal organs.
“We will file charges tomorrow,” Magistrado said.
Police released a certain Ricardo Sale, 50, who was arrested after he was initially suspected to be the perpetrator.
“At the start of our investigation, we have three persons of interest,” Magistrado said. “We are still waiting for the result of the autopsy.” – With Cecille Suerte Felipe
