Staggered toll hike eyed
MANILA, Philippines - The government is amenable to the collection of a staggered toll increase at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway (Cavitex).
“There is an arbitration case for the toll increase. It will be resolved soon,” Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade told a press briefing yesterday.
The Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) through NLEX Corp. filed a notice of arbitration and statement of claims for toll adjustments that should have been collected in January 2013 and January 2015.
MPIC through Cavitex Infrastructure Corp. is also seeking P877 million in compensation for the government’s inaction on the petition for toll increase on Jan.1, 2012, Jan.1, 2014 and Jan.1, 2015.
MPIC earlier said it is willing to enter into a settlement with the government for the overdue toll adjustments.
“Parties are always encouraged to settle and avoid prolonged litigation,” said Romulo Quimbo Jr., NLEX Corp. senior vice president for legal, regulatory and government regulations.
