ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The city government has advised owners and drivers of liquefied petroleum gas and fuel delivery trucks to secure their cargo to ensure these won't fall into the hands of terrorists.
Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar issued the alert in response to unverified information that unidentified terrorists—security forces have been battling members of the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur since May—plan to hijack fuel trucks.
The military has also been continuing operations against the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan and in Sulu.
Salazar said the owners, particularly of trucks transporting highly flammable and explosive products, must take security measures.
The mayor also convened an immediate security meeting with security forces and gas station owners following the recent attack by members of the Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters on villages in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato.
The local chief executive also called on residents to be vigilant and to coordinate with the authorities against terror threats.
