MANILA, Philippines — The Pasay City government called on the public to remain calm and vigilant following the recent incident at hotel and casino complex in the city.

Pasay Mayor Antonino Calixto said that the city government will closely coordinate with the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection with the developments of the incident.

"Let us allow the said agencies to do their mandated duties. We call upon anyone who can provide every assistance and information that may help them," Calixto said in a statement.

Metropolitan Manila police chief Oscar Albayalde said 36 people suffocated from smoke after a gunman stormed into Resorts World Manila and set fire to gambling tables before fleeing with a bag of casino chips.

Police said the suspect has been found dead with his rifle on the fifth floor of the hotel complex. The gunman apparently committed suicide.

Albayalde said that the gunman carried a 2-liter bottle of gasoline, the gambling area was carpeted and the tables were also made of combustible materials.

"The bodies were found in the gaming area of the casino," Albayalde said.

Investigators would check whether the sprinklers in the casino worked, according to Albayalde. — Patricia Lourdes Viray with Associated Press
