MANILA, Philippines — The local government of Valenzuela City has assured residents that it will increase its vigilance against suspicious elements to prevent the city from being a transport point for illegal drugs.

"The LGU (local government unit) will remain alert and active in employing measures to see to it that our numerous industrial establishments and warehouses are only used for legal purposes," Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian said.

Valenzuela City’s assurance came after anti-narcotics operatives seized around 604 kilos of illicit drug crystal methamphetamine or "shabu" with a street value of P3 billion at two warehouses in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City last Friday.

Gatchalian also urged residents to be vigilant to prevent the proliferation of illegal drugs in their neighborhood.

He asked them to report suspicious activity to the authorities.

He  said that the city government will be headstrong in fighting drug traffickers and dealers by working closely with anti-drug operatives, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police and other agencies.

The mayor earlier commended the multi-agency efforts of BOC, PDEA, NBI and the Valenzuela City Police station for the recovery of the shabu in the city. The efforts were also in cooperation with  Chinese law enforcement authorities. —Rosette Adel
