Cop hurt in North Cotabato roadside bombing
LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — A policeman was injured in a roadside bombing at about 9:00 a.m. Friday in Kidapawan City.
PO1 Ronald Espanola, who sustained shrapnel wounds in different parts of his body, is now confined in a hospital.
Superintendent Leo Ajero, chief of the Kidapawan City police, said the injured policeman and his companions, who belong to the Arakan municipal police, were together on a vehicle hit by a bomb.
Ajero said they were passing through a stretch of a highway in Barangay Sikitan in Kidapawan City when an improvised explosive device went off as their patrol car got close.
Espanola and his companions were en route to the North Cotabato provincial police office in Barangay Amas in Kidapawan City from Arakan.
North Cotabato Gov. Emmylou Talino-Mendoza has condemned the attack and vowed to flex his authority to ensure that the culprits are arrested and prosecuted for the bombing.
Senior Superintendent Emmanuel Peralta, director of the North Cotabato provincial police, said they are certain the New People’s Army was behind the roadside bombing and that it was not in any way connected to the ongoing strife in Marawi City.
Combined members of the Maute terror group and the Abu Sayyaf are locked in a showdown with state forces in Marawi City since Tuesday afternoon.
