Pope names new Batanes bishop
MANILA, Philippines - Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Danilo Ulep of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao as bishop of Batanes.
Ulep replaced Bishop Camilo Gregorio, who recently retired from the post.
The 54-year-old priest, the fifth bishop of Batanes, on Saturday said his appointment is a challenge.
“It’s a challenge that God has given me, a new mission, a bigger responsibility,” Ulep said in a statement posted on the website of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.
He said he is looking forward to leading about 20,000 Catholics from six parishes on the island province.
“I’m positive that I’m going to a place where people love their priests and the church,” he said.
With the new appointment, Ulep will leave his current posts as rector of the Cathedral of Tuguegarao, director of the archdiocese’s biblical apostolate and president of the priests’ assembly.
