MANILA, Philippines — Additional soldiers have been assigned to secure Davao City from peace and security threats and terrorism.

The city's information office announced over the weekend that around 400 soldiers of the 16th Infantry "Maglilingkod" Battalion arrived  in Davao City on May 12 to fulfill their assignments. The 16th IB is attached to the 2nd Infantry Division, which has its headquarters in Tanay, Rizal.

“Nautusan po kami na pumunta dito sa Davao para makatulong sa security, para maka-augment sa pwersa ng Eastern Mindanao Command at natutuwa po ang buong pwersa ng 16th Infantry 'Maglilingkod' Battalion,”  Lt. Col  Daren Comia, battalion commander, said.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines' Eastern Mindanao Command is based in Davao City.

"We are thankful for the added security," Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said in a press release.

The battalion was previously deployed in Jolo, Sulu.

Last September, an explosion at Davao City’s busy Roxas Street night market killed 15 people and left several others injured. Three suspected members of the notorious Maute group were arrested for the bombing, a month later.

The Davao night market blast was reportedly staged to disrupt military operations in Sulu, where operations continue against the Abu Sayyaf. —Rosette Adel
