Escaped drug lord inmate nabbed in North Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines – Authorities arrested Friday the drug lord gunmen freed from the North Cotabato provincial jail in a daring attack last January 4.
Melvin Casangyao, who has pending cases in courts, was one of more than 100 detainees who escaped from the facility when Ismael Nasser, also known as Commander Derby, and his men attacked to set him free.
Provincial officials confirmed a week after the jailbreak that Casangyao paid Nasser a hefty amount to “rescue’ him from the jail in Barangay Amas in Kidapawan City, the capital of North Cotabato.
Casangyao, a confessed drug lord, was detained at the provincial jail for large-scale narcotics trafficking and other heinous offenses.
Senior Superintendent Emmanuel Peralta, North Cotabato’s provincial police director, confirmed on Saturday that Casangyao is back in jail, guarded tightly by policemen and personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
Peralta said police agents cornered Casangyao in Barangay Onica in Kidapawan City, acting on a tip by vigilant residents there.
He said the North Cotabato provincial police is thankful to informants who provided information that led to the capture of Casangyao.
Peralta said Casangyao voluntarily turned himself in when he noticed that policemen had surrounded his hideout and were ready to open fire if he refuses to surrender.
