Long weekend: Work, classes suspended on April 28, 29 in parts of Metro Manila

The decision to suspend work and classes in Metro Manila was based on the recommendation of ASEAN 2017 National Organizing Committee – Office of the Director-General for Operations and the Metro Manila Development Authority.

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 1:49 p.m.) — Days after workers were treated with the Holy Week holidays, another long weekend lies ahead for Metro Manila as Malacañang declared a suspension of work and classes in preparation for 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit here.

In the memorandum circular no. 18 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, the Palace declared the in some parts of the metro on April 27 (Thursday) and April 28 (Friday).

The holiday on Thursday, however, only covers government employees working in the cities of Pasay, Makati and Manila.

The entire workforce in private and government offices in Metro Manila will be suspended on Friday.

Class suspension on Thursday will depend on local governments, while classes at public and private schools and on all levels are suspended on Friday.

This marks another long weekend ahead including a regular holiday for Labor Day on May 1 (Monday).

Medialdea, meanwhile, said the suspension of work in the private sector and in places outside Metro Manila is left to discretion of their respective local government or employers.

The Palace also clarified that the circular only declares suspension of work and classes, noting earlier reports that dated covered have been declared "non-working holidays."
