Fishing ban imposed in Samar

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – Commercial fishing is banned in Samar sea until July to allow certain species to spawn and replenish.

“We need to enforce a total ban… because of depleting resources,” said Calbayog City Mayor Ronaldo Aquino, chairman of Samar sea alliance.

The Calbayog City government earlier passed a resolution regulating the harvest and sale of certain species, including galunggong (round scad). It also allocated P2 million for the purchase of motorized boats and equipment for fishermen using dynamite.

A recent study conducted by Jurgen Saeger, a German fisheries development specialist, showed that marine resources in Samar sea have significantly declined. It said deforestation of surrounding lands increased silt from denuded mountains that choke coral reefs. Only some five percent of reefs are considered to be in a healthy condition, it added.
