DILG: Luneta gathering on Feb. 25 for Duterte, not People Power
February 22, 2017 | 4:24pm
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government said the February 25 gathering at Luneta will be to show support for President Rodrigo Duterte and will not have anything to do with the People Power Revolution, which happened 31 years ago on that day.
"Fino-focus natin ang atensyon sa ating pagsuporta sa ating Pangulo sa kanyang pananaw na kailangang matigil na ang iligal na droga, kailangang matigil na ang korapsyon at malabanan ang kahirapan sa ating bayan," DILG Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing said in a press conference.
He added that there will be a vigil, prayers, and a concert that will start at 7 p.m. on February 25 and would probably end before dawn on February 26.
Densing also said that supporters from Pampanga, Bulacan, Manila, Pasay, Parañaque, Makati and Quezon City will be joining a march scheduled at 7 a.m. on February 26.
"Kaya ho natin ginagawa yung sa 25th dahil meron ho tayong mga kasama, nanggaling pa hong Visayas and Mindanao, pupunta lang ho sa Luneta para makiisa sa atin," he added.
The Luneta gathering coincides with the celebration of the 31st anniversary of the 1986 People Revolution, which the Palace has said will be "very simple and very quiet."
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a press briefing on Tuesday that it is time to move on from celebrating the past.
"Move on into the whole aspect of nation building, to give it a more positive outlook and… a more positive understanding," Abella said.
President Duterte has expressed admiration for the ousted dictator whom his father served as a Cabinet member and has more than once said that he considers former Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. a political ally.
He has also said that Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos was one of the few donors to his presidential campaign. Gov. Marcos has denied this and she is not listed as a donor in Duterte's campaign finance documents.
Duterte ordered former President Ferdinand Marcos' remains buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last year as he had promised to do during the campaign.
Former President Fidel Ramos said that Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdela informed him that the anniversary rites of on February 25 will be held inside Camp Aguinaldo and not at the People Power Monument as done in the past.
In a press briefing Tuesday, Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar hinted vaguely at anti-Duterte rallies supposedly planned over the weekend.
