Volcanic quakes recorded around Bulusan

Cet Dematera - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon continued acting up with at least 11 volcanic quakes recorded yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

“For as long as earthquakes are detected, hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruptions,” said Crispulo Diolata, Phivolcs-Sorsogon resident volcanologist.

At least 57 quakes were recorded around the volcano since Monday, prompting Phivolcs to set up a 24-hour watch.

Phivolcs reiterated its warning to the public not to enter the four-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Diolata said Bulusan is known for exploding without warning. The volcano exploded in November and December.
