Phivolcs warns vs lahar flow around Bulusan, Mayon

Cet Dematera - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Residents and trekkers have been warned against entering the permanent danger zones on Bulusan and Mayon volcanoes due to possible lahar flows.

Crispulo Diolata, resident volcanologist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at the Cabid-An monitoring station in Sorsogon, said  ash falls deposited within the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone and six-kilometer extended zone on the southern slopes of Bulusan could flow as lahar due to heavy rains spawned by monsoon rains.

“People living within valleys and along river or stream channels especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sectors of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall,” Phivolcs’ latest bulletin read.

No lahar movement was detected around Mayon, but Phivolcs said active streams and river channels as well as other lahar-prone areas around the volcano should be avoided during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
