Vargas kumpiyansang makukuha ang POC presidency

MANILA, Philippines - Ilang oras matapos ang deadline ay pormal na isinumite ni Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines head Ricky Vargas ang kanyang certificate of candidacy para sa presidential seat ng Philippine Olympic Committee sa opisina ng POC sa Philsports Complex sa Pasig.

Umaasa si Vargas na makakakuha ng malaking su­porta mula sa mayorya ng 40 National Sports Asso­ciations (NSAs) ang magluluklok ng mga opisyales sa POC, kasama na ang presidente, sa eleksyon sa Nob­yembre 25.

“Hopefully, as we get closer to November 25 we could prove that we could make this big step not for us but for them (NSAs at mga atleta),” wika ni Vargas.

Tatapatan ng 64-anyos na si Vargas ang 82-anyos na si incumbent president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, Jr.

Simula nang maihalal bilang pangulo ng POC noong 2004 ay hindi pa natatalo si Cojuangco.

Ang huling pagkakataon na may humamon kay Co­juangco ay noong 2008 kung saan niya tinalo si Art Ma­capagal, 21-19, ng shooting association.

Ang iba pang posisyong paglalabanan ay ang chairman, first vice president, second vice president, treasurer at auditor, habang ang secretary-general ay iniluluklok ng POC president.

Ang listahan ng mga kandidato ay sasaliksikin naman ng POC Commission of Elections na binubuo nina Abo­no party list Rep. Conrado Estrella, dating International Olym­pic Committee representative to the Philippines Frank Eli­zalde at Bernie Oca ng La Salle.

Nakasabay ni Vargas, ang kanang kamay ni businessman/sportman Manny V. Pangilinan at TNT Katropa board of governor sa PBA, sa pagsusumite ng kanilang cer­tificate of candidacy para tumakbo sa kani-kanilang mga posisyon ay sina Tagaytay Rep. Bambol Tolentino ng cycling (chairman), Rep. Albee Benitez ng badminton (1st vice president), retired Gen. Lucas Managuelod ng muay thai (2nd vice president), Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios (trea­surer) at Ting Ledesma ng table tennis (auditor).

Nasa tiket naman ni Cojuangco sina Tom Carrasco ng triathlon (chairman), Joey Romasanta ng volleyball (1st vice president), Jeff Tamayo ng soft tennis (2nd vice pre­sident), Julian Camacho ng wushu (treasurer) at Jonne Go ng canoe kayak (auditor).
